Hunan Provincial Museum
Hunan Provincial Museum was founded in the early nineteen fifties. It is located in Kaifu District of Changsha City, the historical and cultural city, and adjacent to the Martyr Park, and it covers an area of 51000 square meters and the public building area is 29000 square meters. The historical relics are rich, especially the famous Mawangdui Tomb, bronze bares of Shang and Zhou Dynasties, Chu cultural relics, ancient ceramic, calligraphy, painting and modern cultural relics. It is the largest comprehensive museum of history and art in Hunan province, one of the national outstanding patriotism education demonstration bases and one of 4A-level tourist attractions in Hunan Province. Hunan provincial museum show the rich connotation of Hu Xiang culture with its unique style and become one of the landmark of the ancient city, Changsha.
The collections of museum are more than 110000 pieces, and the firsts have 763. There are Neolithic collections such as stone and pottery, bronze bears of Shang and Zhou Dynasties, Chu cultural relics, relics unearthed from Mawangdui Han Tombs, Preface of Lanting of Wangxizhi, the famous thinker Wang Fuzhi’s handwriting in late Ming and early Qing Dynasty and so on.
Hunan provincial museum collects the cultural relics of Hunan, showing the context of civilization of Xiang Chu culture. Each year, it attracts about one million Chinese and foreign tourists to visit and it is an important window to understand the process of civilization and the mystery of Hu Xiang culture.
